For Christmas eve, Nolan's uncle was kind enough to invite all of us over to his place in Sampaloc to celebrate. They cooked us up a great meal and the traditional caroling took place, where the neighborhood kids go from house to house singing Christmas songs for money (or in our case we gave out candy). Midnight mass is a popular tradition here too, churches get packed in this Roman Catholic dominated culture - we passed by one Catholic church literally bursting with people inside and outside sitting on the lawn, on walls, sidewalks and fences.

A lot of Filipinos travel out of Manila to the celebrate in the provinces, but there were still plenty of parties as we passed through streets of blaring karaoke machines, and even grown shirtless men dancing to the beat of Rihanna.

Most people stay up passed midnight celebrating, but unfortunately with jet lag still haunting us foreigners, we couldn't keep our eyes open past 11pm (5am in Hawaii), which is probably the latest we've stayed up since we've been here!

Finding out the needs of the young adults in the PI - Meeting Pastor Jesse, Philippines Director of Master's Commission

Meeting with Pastor Jesse, who has a passionate heart to see young people discipled

FILLING DONUT HOLES
Today we met with Pastor Jesse and his wife. Pastor Jesse is the Philippines Director for Master's Commission. This organization focuses on discipling young adults through their intense one year course that strengthens the faith of young people before they enter college or the marketplace. This was another divinely orchestrated relationship that Nolan had developed a couple years ago and finally had a chance to meet him face to face today. We found out that he too has the same heart and vision that Nolan had shared with us (coffee shop churches that disciple and evangelize through daily relationship building). Pastor Jesse shared that the young professionals of the Philippines are trying to fill God sized donut holes in their hearts with the pursuit of money, gadgets, travel, etc.  In the end they are unhappy, with 15% thinking about suicide and 9% who attempt it.

DONATING BOOKS
We also had a chance to donate two boxes of children's books to them, which they will use to help out a school that is in need of resources. The books were donated by Lynnette's friend who is a librarian at Manoa Elementary School.

Getting insight from Philippines Director of Compassion International, Noel & his wife

Meeting with Noel and his wife, drinking coffee and dreaming about what God can do here

INSIGHTS TO REACHING THE YOUNG ADULTS
Yesterday we had a chance to meet Noel and his wife. Noel is the Director or Compassion International here in the Philippines. Nolan had made contact with him in a trip earlier in the year and continued to build this divinely orchestrated relationship. Meeting Noel was like meeting a friend we had known for years, his heart for new church plants and for young people was encouraging. He gave us a lot of insight to the spiritual needs of the young professionals out here (20 and thirty year olds), one of the greater unchurched demographics in the city. And he has some insight into reaching the young people in the marketplace as well.

KEY PEOPLE IN THE CITY
Noel seems like he will be a key player in this church plant, it's possible that there is already a small core young people that he knows, that might be interested in  being a part of this vision. We pray that God will continue to lead us to the people, that he has already placed this same vision in, for the city. We'll be meeting up again with Noel and his wife, so that he can take us around the city.

Made it Safely to the Philippines!

At the Philippines airport baggage claim there are 4 boxes for every bag that comes out!

FAMILIAR FACES
After an 11 hour fight we finally made it to the motherland. On the flight we ran into a couple familiar faces. The first was a guy who sitting next to me across the aisle. His not so subtle glaring forced me to just look him straight at his face to figure out what this person had against me - it turns out it was Micah, a face from the old Xtreme days (Young adult ministry at New Hope). He used to play bass on the worship team.

Lynnette spotted the second familiar face, walking into the bathroom. So I got up and stood by the bathroom door and used my airplane stalking skills, trying to look natural hanging out by the bathrooms without actually needing to use the bathroom. After he had done his duties, Billy Manini walked out. This is another good friend from our ministry's past. He was on his way to meet his wife in Cebu for Christmas.

After landing we got our bags and found Nolan and David waiting for us in a sea of people, and Nolan's uncle drove us through typical insane traffic that is Manila.

Heading off to the Philippines right now

I might be a little too excited.

Lynnette and I are on our way to the Philippines on misson trip with 5 other team members to make preparations for the 2011 church plant. We would love it if you would be praying for us while we are out there. Here are some of our prayer requests:

1. Team unity
2. To disern Gods direction as we meet pastors, and scout for a location
3. To build strong relationships in the short time we are there
4. Opportunities to bless and serve the Filipino people
